Book Signing Setup

Guest post by Armand Rosamilia

Cthulhu and MeI’ve been to a few conventions in my time. Over the years I’ve been a vendor, a guest and a Regular Joe who paid to get in with the rest of the commoners.

My favorite conventions are the ones where I can not only be a panelist, but a vendor as well. Earn back a few bucks while chatting with other panelists and audience members and be able to afford a drive-thru fast food lunch on the long ride home after the con.

So, in no particular order… here are 10 Things I Know About Cons As A Vendor

  1. I like a full table.

At conventions I often see authors setting up to sell their two releases, and they spread them across the table. Three feet for one book and the other half of the table for the other, with nothing fancy to get me…

SPOTLIGHT ON: Sean Taylor

How did you get involved in the upcoming Imaginarium convention?

I’ve known Zim for years. And he was nice enough to extend a vacati—I mean an opportunity to attend to a hack like me.

What is your latest release and what genre is it?

My latest work is from Moonstone Books, and it’s called OF MONSTERS AND MEN. I have a short pulp story inside featuring a team-up between the pulp heroine the Golden Amazon and Quasimodo himself, the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

 of monsters and men

Something unique about it.

The whole book is about team ups between pulp heroes and classic monsters. What’s not to love?

Your short Bio.

Sean Taylor is an award-winning writer of stories. He grew up telling lies, and he got pretty good at it, so now he writes them into full-blown adventures for comic books, graphic novels, magazines, book anthologies and novels. He makes stuff up for money, and he writes it down for fun. He’s a lucky fellow that way.

He’s best known for his work on the best-selling Gene Simmons Dominatrix comic book series from IDW Publishing and Simmons Comics Group. He has also written comics for TV properties such as the top-rated Oxygen Network series The Bad Girls Club. His other forays into fiction include such realms as steampunk, pulp, young adult, fantasy, super heroes, sci-fi, and even samurai frogs on horseback (seriously, don’t laugh). However, his favorite contribution to the world will be as the writer/editor who invented the genre and coined the term “Hookerpunk.”

How did you get involved in the upcoming Imaginarium convention?

I ran into Stephen Zimmer when I was appearing at the Destroyer Books booth at Fandom Fest. He told me about it and I wanted to support his convention and meet other creative people.

What is your latest release and what genre is it?

Darkness Unbound: Lady in Black is an occult horror novella, I am currently at work on the second in the series.

 Darkness-Unbound-5x8

Quick description of it.

When a family of four is murdered in their sleep the entire city is on edge. Police investigate the occult connections between these murders and similar murders thirteen years ago. One detective knows the truth. Something dark from Sister Marian’s past has returned. Now innocent lives are being lost. Will she have the faith to face her greatest fear?

Something unique about it.

There are many tales of exorcism, but I wondered what happens after the exorcism to those that survive.

Glenn Porzig is best known as the creator of the comic book heroine Ace of Diamonds. Glenn grew up reading comics, pulp novels, and watching too much TV. Glenn and his wife Carly have written three screenplays together. They live in Indiana with a menagerie of both furry and scaly pets. Since 2005 he has been the co-host of a weekly fandom podcast at PodCulture.com.

He has worked over twenty years in the television industry including two highly rated specials for SCI FI Channel: The Roswell Crash: Startling New Evidence, and The New Roswell: Kecksburg Exposed. He currently, literally, has his head in the clouds as a videographer on a TV news helicopter.  Recently he has turned his attention to writing short stories and novellas. His occult horror novella Darkness Unbound: Lady in Black was released this summer. Glenn’s first short story, Master of the Dead, is due to be published by Destroyer Books in the More Blood anthology this fall.

SPOTLIGHT ON: Annie Jones

How did you get involved with Imaginarium Convention?
Serendipity. Friends mentioned they were going. I followed the page on Facebook, asked some questions and Stephen Zimmer invited me to take part. It pretty much had to go that way as am of the “I write to avoid real people” ilk. Not to worry, I’ve done a LOT of panels and presentations at conferences, seminars and workshops over the years, so I won’t be huddled under a table, sending my answers out scrawled on paper airplanes.
What’s your latest release and what genre is it?
Put Annie Jones in the search bar of Amazon, most of the stuff that shows up is me. My bestselling self pub/re-issue is The Christmas Sisters for All Seasons series. They list as Christian fiction, as most of my books do, even though they really aren’t religious. They make me wish there was a “Hallmark Movie meets Grit Lit” genre because that’s where I’d put most of my work right now. (The more mainstream books were written under Luanne Jones and the rights have not reverted on those).

My former agent would take me to task if I did not mention that I’m an awarding winning, internationally bestselling author of some 38 books with 8 publishers and 4 names (some pen names, some variations on my real name). Am now publishing independently from a small part of that backlist along with new material.

How did you get involved in the upcoming Imaginarium convention?

My friend Bobby Nash told me about the convention.

What is your latest release and what genre is it?

My latest book is called Legacies. It’s the second in the Broken Bloodline trilogy, and I’d consider it to be somewhere between Dark Fantasy and Horror.

 Legacies Front Cover

Quick description of it.

At the end of the first book, the group eradicated their ancient nemesis, the Hunters, and everything seemed to be looking up, but now something on a more apocalyptic scale is coming, and they’re not really sure how to stop it. All hell is, quite literally, about to break loose, and the only thing standing in the way is a Werewolf, three Vampires and a schizophrenic Sorcerer.

Something unique about it.

How about a 12 year old sociopath with a gift for magic that captures and tortures Faeries?

Spotlight On Jean-Philipe Chapleau #Imaginarium

Standard

JPChapleau

SPOTLIGHT ON: Jean-Philipe Chapleau, but I go by “JP” to everyone: something about people not being able to saying my name correctly. Plus, only my mother uses my first name when I used to get in trouble

How did you get involved in the upcoming Imaginarium convention?

I posted on my blog (http://jpchapleau.blogspot.com/2014/07/open-letters-to-con-organizers-tabletop.html) about how I was dissatisfied that local cons were dropping table-top gaming in favor of sales events only. It seems I was not the only one who shared that opinion. And through the magic of social networking, I got in touch with Stephen Zimmer one of the masterminds of the con. We talked, and I offered to help with the con. So I offered to be a guest to help with gaming-related workshops and panels. From there to here!

I am a big proponent and supporter of local events as… well events! Make them big, make them memorable. And that is the contribution I wish to bring, make this new con bigger and better than all the others.

I remember when I started writing – in 1999-2000 – having a con like this might have helped me greatly instead of having of having to discover what works and what doesn’t by myself.

So I filled the guest form on the site and offered my name! I was quite pleased when they said yes!

What is your latest release and what genre is it?

For the past year, I have been publishing tabletop RPG. I am the campaign director for the NeoExodus Legacies organized play campaign using the Pathfinder RPG.

Our last release was an adventure that was part of our campaign. NeoExodus is “a traditional fantasy setting where we deal with theme usually found in Sci-Fi, political thriller and horror.”

I am myself a fan of all three of these genres and bringing these influences together is something that really inspires me. The “major villains” draw upon classic, villainous drow with a good measure of cenobites (from Clive Barker’s Hellraiser universe). These “First Ones” are bad to the core and definitely major forces of evil. Yes, we took our name from the villains of the setting! First Ones Entertainment – or FOE for short!

We also publish GOSTOR (a Grumpy Old-Schooler’s Take On Rules) products

 Gostor.WhileOnTheRoad

Quick description of it.

We publish adventures under license from LPJ Design who published the setting originally (www.rpgnow.com/product/97023/NeoExodus-Starter-Kit-PFRPG-BUNDLE?affiliate_id=316083).

It is a setting that is clearly different than most in that it’s not “elves and dwarves.” Rather, it has psionic rat-men, simian-minotaur mutants, plant-people, arcane crystalline entities, cannibals, and humans!

Something unique about it.

The adventures form a whole campaign players can play in and tell us what happened in their games. We then tabulate all of the tables to see what players have chosen, overall.

For example, in our recent events, one of our major non-player characters (NPCs) was assassinated by the villains because the players opted to do something else instead. They opted to glory.

Our campaign has not only a collection of adventure, but we also publish a few short narratives to keep our fans aware of what the villains are doing. It allows us a chance to write short fiction pieces.

The biggest thing is that we give our players is a way that they get a chance to influence the world and the storyline. We gladly sponsor and support new adventure writers to break into the industry.

SPOTLIGHT ON: C. Bryan Brown

How did you get involved in the upcoming Imaginarium convention?

Mr. Zimmer mentioned it and passed along an invite. I gladly accepted.

What is your latest release and what genre is it?

My novella, Men of Five, was recently released again with a fancy new cover. It blends the genres of sci-fi and horror.

 men of five

Quick description of it.

Military science fiction where soldiers meet monsters on an alien planet, but are they monsters or something more? The novella deals with faith—not only in yourself, but in friends, family, and quite possibly, a higher power.

Something unique about it.

There are three additional short stories after the novella, one of which involves Santa Claus as a mob boss, perfect for the fast approaching silly season!

How did you get involved in the upcoming Imaginarium convention?

A friend of mine had told me about it then I got the invite from Stephen. It looked like a lot of fun so I signed up.

What is your latest release and what genre is it?

My latest release is Embattled Home, the fourth book in my Lost and Found series. I write contemporary military romance, for the most part.

 EmbattledHome-600x900

Quick description of it.

Chad Lowell is one of the partners of the Lost and Found Investigative Service and they are hired to gather incriminating evidence in a child custody case against Lora O’Neil, the mother. Unfortunately they realize they’re on the wrong side of the fence when the man that hires them tries to abduct the child.

Chad steps in to protect Lora and the little girl and quickly loses his heart to them.

Something unique about it.

All of the heroes in the series are ‘combat modified’. Chad is an amputee and burn survivor and doesn’t expect anybody would ever be willing to take him the way he is. But Lora has her own survivor issues. She sees beyond the physical to the heart of a warrior beneath.

Spotlight On Rebekah McAuliffe #Imaginarium

SPOTLIGHT ON: Rebekah McAuliffe

How did you get involved in the upcoming Imaginarium convention?

My cousin Amy McCorkle was already a guest at Imaginarium. She had been coaching me on writing and publishing my first novel for about three months at that point.  It was around February, if I remember correctly, that she suggested the idea of launching with her at an upcoming convention called Imaginarium.  I contacted Stephen Zimmer and asked if he would allow me to launch my debut novel at Imaginarium with Amy, and he said yes. I’ve been excitedly preparing for the event ever since.

What is your latest release and what genre is it?

Gears of Golgotha is a sci-fi/dystopian novel.

 Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00067]

Quick description of it.

A thousand years after World War III, Earth is united into the global nation of New Pangaea. Society is separated into Chemists, those who are skilled in science, and Mages, those who practice magic. The work of New Pangaea revolves around the Gears, large machines that orbit Earth, powering and protecting the planet.

Erin Luciani is training to become a Chemist, like her family before her. But when she meets Dr. Makswell Sharpe, the Chemist in charge of the Gears, her entire life is turned upside down. And from there spawns an adventure full of intrigue, conspiracy, unrequited love, and much more.

Something unique about it.

I say Gears of Golgotha is sci-fi/dystopia because while the novel does take place in a bleak future, there is also a unique focus on the technology of the time, and how it impacts the way society functions. Think the government of 1984, the culture of Brave New World, and the divisive climate of Divergent.

I saw it on Stephen Zimmer and Mandi Lynch’s walls, and realized it might be the successor to Fandom Fest. And Zimmer always does a really good lit track schedule.

What is your latest release and what genre is it?

My latest is Nikolai Revenant. It’s a reworking of my dark future Pygmalion. Last original release was “Riding the Edge” with Naomi Brooks, in Dominant Tendencies. It was kinky urban fantasy.

 Nikolai front cover

Quick description of it.

James Ligatos is a powerful man with an unusual hobby. And this time, former street gang leader, Nick Boyd, is the target. After a disastrous heist, Nick is remanded to the custody and training of Ligatos and his cadre, only to learn the world is a very different place than he ever imagined.

Sell More Books Top 10: Variables that build success

Standard

RCC with some more great advice!

C h a z z W r i t e s . c o m

We often don’t know for sure which strategies sell more books so we have to fire a lot of bullets into the darkness. Last week, the best advice I heard, repeated from a couple of authors, was about the willingness to experiment.

When it comes to radioactive isotopes, infant juggling and indie publishing, it’s good fun to mess around. Play with the variables to sell more books. What are some of those variables? Here we go:

1. If your cover doesn’t sell the book hard enough, change it.

Write Your Book: Aspire to Inspire wasn’t selling the numbers I wanted. I changed the cover.

WYB NEW COVERcover

2. I played with categories for the Hit Man Series.

My funny and luckless assassin is Cuban, so I tried the Hispanic & Latino category. Didn’t work. I switched it back. Each failure is a refinement. It’s not permanent so relax and fire more shots into the dark.

SPOTLIGHT ON: Mysti Parker. I also answer to Misty, Mom, Mama, Mommy, and Hey You.

How did you get involved in the upcoming Imaginarium convention?

I don’t exactly remember, though I’m pretty sure Amy McCorkle had something to do with that. Plus, Stephen Zimmer asked me to hand out flyers at other events. I also heard something about a cash bar…J

What is your latest release and what genre is it?

Hearts in Exile, Book #3 of the standalone Tallenmere fantasy romance series. I emphasize standalone because most folks in this cliffhanger trilogy age don’t understand that you really can have a series comprised of separate stories. There will be more, just not sure how many yet.

 17788233

Quick description of it.

The whole blurb is a bit wordy, so I’ll let one of my reviewers sum it up:

“Hearts in Exile is a story spanning sixty years, involving paladins, elves, necromancers, gods and dwarves, to name but a few. The two main protagonists, Sir Robert (Igrorio Everlyn ) and Loralee Munroviel, daughter of a High Priestess, are two young people who fall desperately and deeply in love only to be separated for ten long years, neither knowing where the other is. Loralee is banished to an island to be a Dragon Keeper with only the company of dragons and a pet snippet called Puddle. Sir Robert becomes a Holy Paladin and goes off to fight and achieve great things for king and country. A freak storm eventually reunites them. Throughout the story we learn, from the perspective of both Loralee and Sir Robert, how their lives and love began and see the tale unfold and build to an enveloping crescendo. I don’t want to give too much of the story away; it really is something you should read for yourself.” ~Amelia Curzon, 6/9/13

Something unique about it.

Just like all the Tallenmere series books, Sir Robert was one of the main supporting characters in the previous book (Serenya’s Song), and is now starring in this one. A main supporting character in this book (Mirabelle Hearton) will star in Book #4. The pattern will continue that way, linking the books to an over-arching plotline, but ensuring that each one tells its own standalone story.

What is your latest release and what genre is it?

Rodz ‘N Rust is my forthcoming title from Acclaim Press, due for release this fall. It’s an automotive photo book that would make an excellent gift book for automotive enthusiasts or for those who appreciate fine art.

Quick description of it.

Rodz ‘N Rust explores the rust and renewal of cars and trucks, dating from the 1970’s muscle car era, all the way back to the 1920’s. I include a lot of abstractions of the rust and weathered patina, shadows curved around Detroit steel, the personalities exuding from well-crafted rides that emote sensuality swaggering down the road.

Something unique about it.

Many automotive photo books focus on restored cars and trucks. I explore the abstractions found only in rust and peeling paint, chrome worked into ornamental art, the stories these rides have that could only be gathered from miles and miles of road. explores the rust and renewal of cars and trucks, dating from the 1970’s muscle car era, all the way back to the 1920’s. How did you get involved in the upcoming Imaginarium convention?

I remember someone posting about them looking for panelists on a writers group. I thought “Why not? I have some wisdom that might help SOMEONE…surely. Right?” And seeing as how the event is being held in my home city, it was a zombie-esque no-brainer.

What is your latest release and what genre is it?

My latest release (by the time this posts, I’m guessing), is Cry Zombie Cry. It’s horror and the eighth book in my I Zombie series.

 czc_cover

Quick description of it.

With the Guignol Gang fully armed and prepared to defend the castle, Bethany and company are off to see the Wizard of Odd

The long-awaited entry to the I Zombie series has arrived.

And it’s ready to rock.

Bethany Nitshimi is back and ready to crush the Zero Day Collective with a wall of sound. Together with the metal band Unsun, Bethany will have the undead horde banging their heads until brain runs thick in the streets.

If it’s too loud, you’re too old…or dead.

Something unique about it.

This is the first in what I’m calling my “Rock Cycle”. The Polish metal band, Unsun, stars in this novel and served as the inspiration for me continuing that theme into The Last Casket series (starting Kitty in a Casket) and a new series (starring another band that  I will announce very soon).

SPOTLIGHT ON: Dan Jolley

How did you get involved in the upcoming Imaginarium convention?
Stephen Zimmer and I have moved in some of the same circles for years, and those circles intersected pretty consistently at a local convention in Chattanooga, Tennessee called ConNooga. We wound up on a lot of the same panels, and got to know each other in that sort of particular way that happens when you share panels with someone: while we didn’t interact with each other directly at first, we each got to hear the other’s answers to a lot of different (usually writing-related) questions. So after a bit of that, Stephen and I realized how much we had in common, and when he started ramping up toward Imaginarium, he reached out and asked if I would be the Imaginator for the comic book genre. I felt pretty damn honored, and of course accepted immediately.

T EoME cover

What is your latest release and what genre is it?
I’m working on a couple of things right now. The first is a six-issue comic book mini-series, published by Dark Horse Comics, called The Terminator: Enemy of My Enemy. The other project is the upcoming video game Dying Light, developed by Techland and distributed by Warner Brothers.

Dying_Light_cover

Quick description of it.
Enemy of My Enemy takes place in the Terminator universe, and is set entirely in 1985. It happens in parallel to the events in the movie franchise, so it stars an entirely new cast of characters and a situation only tangentially connected to the Linda Hamilton/Michael Bien film; it’s what happens when Skynet sends a Terminator back to eliminate a target, but the Resistance is unable to send a soldier to try to stop it. So when tough, smart, gorgeous, dangerous-as-hell ex-CIA assassin Farrow Greene crosses paths with the new Terminator, she’s one of the few humans alive who can survive the experience. And when Greene and the Terminator realize their goals are not entirely mutually exclusive, it leads to a situation that I don’t believe has been seen before in the Terminator franchise. I pitched the idea and wrote the scripts, which are illustrated by the supremely talented team of Jamal Igle, Ray Snyder, and Wes Dzioba.

Dying Light is…well, here, here’s the official description: “Dying Light is an action survival horror game presented in first-person perspective. The game is set in a vast and dangerous open world. During the day, you roam an urban environment devastated by a mysterious epidemic, scavenging for supplies and crafting weapons to help you defeat the hordes of mindless, flesh-hungry enemies the plague has created. At night, hunter becomes prey as the infected grow in strength and aggression – but even more lethal are the nocturnal, inhuman predators that leave their hives to feed. You will need to make use of all your skills and any available means to survive till dawn.”
I was brought on initially to help with side quests and to naturalize the dialogue and text written by the Polish team, but over the course of my three-month stay in Wrocław, I got more and more involved in the main story. Now I think my official credit is “Story Writer.”

Something unique about it.
In the Terminator mini-series, when Greene and the Terminator realize their goals are not entirely mutually exclusive, it leads to a situation that I don’t believe has been seen before in the Terminator franchise. (The title is a big clue as to what that situation is.)

Dying Light is, to my knowledge, the first game ever that can be described as “parkour vs. zombies.”

How did you get involved in the upcoming Imaginarium convention?

I am a Seventh Star Press author, and when the Imaginarium concept was announced, I couldn’t wait to be a part of it, volunteering and as a SSP author.

What is your latest release and what genre is it?

My latest novel, at the time of this writing, is Sinking Down (Road Ghosts #2). The series is urban fantasy, though it’s been called horror lite or “Scooby-Doo for grownups”. It’s got ghosts and ghouls and demons, but it’s also full of humor, friendship, and adventure. The third book in the series will be released in September, 2014.

 SinkingDown_WEB-1000

Quick description of it.

Sinking Down is the story of the Little Ghoul, discovered living feral in the woods by ghost hunters Brett and Liz. After the poor semi-undead tween girl is kidnapped, they race against time to save her. The chase becomes personal when Brett shows signs of becoming a ghoul and sharing the same fate if they’re too late.

I met Stephen Zimmer at a book fair last year and was excited to hear what he was planning. And since I was excited about it, I figured others would be also. So I spread the word through Kentuckiana Authors. Now we’re all excited.

What is your latest release and what genre is it?

The first in a five book series, My Beautiful Suicide, was released October 2013. The second in the series, Controlling Cosette, is scheduled to be released this fall. The series is a dark, twisted, new adult, fiction.

 Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000026_00024]

Quick description of it.

Cosette has a rough life, but it isn’t until she accidentally kills someone that Cosette makes the decision to end it. Unwilling to hurt friends and family, Cosette feels the best method of suicide is to become a victim. But when she goes out and gets attacked; instincts take over and she ends up killing her attackers. Guilty, desperate, and scared, Cosette does the unthinkable.

Something unique about it.

It’s written in first person present, which puts the reader directly into the mind of the disturbed main character, Cosette. And just when you expect her to respond one way, she drops a bomb and does the opposite. Most of my reviewers love the twists, and turns, especially the one at the end.

How did you get involved in the upcoming Imaginarium convention?

I was forwarded an email from a colleague who suggested I attend the conference. Once I took a look at the website, I realized it was a place I needed to be as both an author and publisher, so I contacted Stephen Zimmer and the rest is history.

What is your latest release and what genre is it?

As Maddie James, I write romance fiction. My latest release is Brazen, the second book in my Soul Mates time travel series. Book three is slated for release this month.

 SOULMATES BRAZEN MD

Quick description of it.

Can lost souls reunite across time, when all hope at love has been abandoned and demons of the past refuse to go away?

Pitched from a ship during a violent storm in the year 1746, Victoria Porter washes ashore, soon to be rescued by a man on a strange mechanical beast who whisks her away into a world beyond anything she could have imagined.

In 2014, Colton MacKenzie fears he has written his last bestselling horror novel until he discovers two things—The Cult of Teach and a tantalizing nymph wandering an Ocracoke Island beach. Fascinated by the history that surrounds the Legend of Blackbeard’s Chalice, he seeks to learn more about these modern-day pirates and hopefully write a bestseller using the premise.

He’d planned on riding this ride solo until the strange waif on the back of his Harley touches him in ways his demons hadn’t let anyone touch in a long, long time….

Something unique about it.

This series is based around pirate lore – specifically around the death of Edward Teach aka Blackbeard. It includes a modern day pirate cult, time travel and paranormal elements, the search for a chalice made from Blackbeard’s skull, and of course, romance. This book, Brazen, has some erotic passages and some horror elements. All of this is outside the types of books Maddie James typically writes.

How did you get involved in the upcoming Imaginarium convention?

Stephen Zimmer and I met several years ago when he was heading up the literary track at Fandom Fest.  We became fast friends and when I heard that he wanted to do a convention specifically for writers, I was eager to jump aboard!

What is your latest release and what genre is it?

My latest is a short erotic horror piece from Ellora’s Cave called “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.”

 Gentlemen Prefer Blondes_PROOF3

Quick description of it.

Lizzie is a fangirl of monumental proportions.  She’s spent the last few years stalking the object of her affection, movie star Alexander Kensington.  When she finally gets the chance to meet him, their erotic encounter quickly takes a sinister turn.

Something unique about it.

Though the story is erotic in nature, there is no hero, no heroine and no ’happily ever after.’

Your short Bio.

Alexandra Christian is an author of mostly paranormal erotic romance and horror.  In case you don’t know what that means, she writes about not-so-nice girls getting it on with out- of- this- world heroes.  Vampires, werewolves, dragons, angels and demons– and that’s just recently!

A self-proclaimed “Southern Belle from Hell,” Lexxx is a native South Carolinian who lives with an epileptic wiener dog and a pet ghost hunter.  She has published several novels, novellas and short stories with Ellora’s Cave, Purple Sword Publications, Mocha Memoirs Press and most recently, Seventh Star Press.  She looks forward to sharing her twisted view of reality with the masses through erotic paranormal romance and horror.  Lexxx’s long-term aspirations are to one day be a bestselling authoress and part-time pinup girl.
